How to write a killer speech
Maid of honour
How exciting, your best friend is getting married and she has chosen you to be her maid of honour! You feel truly special having received the title but now it dawns on you… this comes with a big responsibility… THE SPEECH.
The bride chose you for the job because she knows you can handle it. So don’t let this task get the best of you, follow these tips and take control of the task at hand. We know the wedding is months and months away, but now is the time to start:
- Plan ahead: Open up a new note section in your phone, every time a story or idea pops into your head write it down. Trust us, you will forget it once it comes time to put pen to paper. Do this over the next few months.
- Draft it up: Now that you have a collection of ideas, write a quick draft. Nothing fancy just start putting your words in print. You can revisit this speech and tweak it as the day approaches. Make sure you begin by introducing yourself and thanking the couple for choosing you to be apart of their day.
- Keep it short and sweet: We know as the maid of honour you have a million stories. We recommend choosing 2-3 stories max and keep the inside jokes to a minimum. Although you are writing to the bride, you want the other guests to be able to connect with what you’re sharing. To keep the audience engaged we recommend keeping your speech to 3 – 4 minutes in length.
- Keep it classy: Today is a day for the bride to shine in a positive light, it’s not the time or place to be sharing inappropriate stories in front of her entire family (and new extended side of the family).
- Talk about the groom: Don’t forget to address her other half. This is the toast to the bride, but it’s a great opportunity to let him know he is the perfect fit for your BFF!
Lastly and most importantly, be yourself. Don’t try and be a comedian if you’re not naturally hilarious! Be you, that’s what the bride wants and that’s why she chose you for the part! If you need more great tips check out our Pinterest board for more great articles.
